Blog #2 El estudiante de Salamanca
After lecture today when we identified the 5 common themes for romanticism, I wanted to discuss the first theme that we covered, emotion. Under this theme we made a list of a variety of aspects of this theme. One that is obviously very important in a romantic work is love. After finishing El estudiante de Salamanca, I noticed another type of love that we did not cover much in class. In most romantic works, there is a romantic type love toward another person. This love that we talked about is the strong romantic feelings and need for the other person. This love is different than an important type of love in this work. Towards the end of the work, Don Diego comes to fight Don Felix because of what Don Felix did to his sister. This love that Don Diego has for his sister is a type of love that I do not normally think about in romantic works. To me, this love is the result of a pact or family bond that is formed through life and results in such protection and support for a family member. I thought it was very interesting that this theme of love had a large impact on my while reading a variation of a Don Juan legend.
