Twlight

Romanticism. I think in todays terms it is hard to be romantic, we are constantly communicating via facebook, texting, email, and more. The secret, the mystery, and the desire behind the "old" love if you will isnt there any more. But over the past few years, a raging romantic novel series called Twilight, as most of you has emerged showing us the modern day romantic love. Yes, so many of us are fascinated by the stars int he movies like Robert Pattenson, Taylor Laughtner and so on, but essentially this series is a great example of modern day romanticism. When I was reading Espronceda, and reading deliriously through the dream scenes, the tears, the horror story, and above all this love story I couldn't help but think of Twilight. Bella the young girl in love with a vampire is described much like Elvira, she exemplifies our version of a "tender" young girl who is pure and innocent. And the fear, the mystery, and the horro like story is centered around Edward, a vampire. Though he is not a Don Juan, like Don Felix, he still encompasses everything a girl wants in today society, tall, strong, handsome, fearless, mysterious, and somewhat untouchable, many of the characteristics of a Don Juan. The style of the writing is more colloquil, and the novels are clearly not written in verse like Espronceda, however, I think this story helps us to see and to feel what a life consuming, all or nothing, life or death sort of love means to us today.

You are so right that Twilight is "Romantic"! And that aspect of impossibility that's in "romantic" love-- how the lovers have to overcome all sorts of obstacles to be together-- that's in there too. Great comparison!
