Post 1-El si de las ninas
In response to today's lecture/discussion, I wanted to further discuss the relationship between Simon and Don Diego. Don Diego, a wealthy bachelor, has traveled with Simon, Diego's servant, to Guadalajara. They are at an inn, and Don Diego confides in Simon with a secret that he has regarding the marriage between himself and Francisca. This is where we begin to see their relationship. In addition to the normal tasks one would think a servant performs, Simon serves as a companion to Don Diego. I find this relationship very interesting because Don Diego really wants the assurance and support from Simon. When Simon says that he thinks that the marriage (who he assumes is between Francisca and Don Carlos) is a good idea, Don Carlos seems more confident and relaxed now that someone else knows. When the two continue on this topic and the idea of age difference is brought up, Simon now realizes that Don Diego is planning on marrying Francisca. At this point, Simon is very surprised by this information. This is just on example we have seen that illustrates their relationship. Simon traveled with Don Diego from Madrid, demonstrating his loyalty. Simon performs the tasks that a normal servant would which also enhance his loyalty. The important part of this relationship though is the how much Don Diego values the opinion and trusts Simon. Don Diego did not want people to know about this marriage, but he wanted to get Simon's opinion and trusted that he would keep quiet.
