Romanticism... again
Upon seeing that we were going to be having a class discussion about the era of Romanticism, I promptly returned to my notes from last quarter. I took Spanish 555 in the fall, and we ready works from a multitude of eras, and I remembered that we had read one that was written during the Romantic period. We read Tradiciones Peruanas close to the end of the quarter, so it was fresh in my mind, and I was able to see some similarities between the notes that I took (obviously) and the two books. There are two main characters who fit the exact same profile, don Fernando de Vergara from Tradiciones Peruanas and Felix from El Estudiante de Salamanca, because they are both described as players, or "Don Juan's". Another similarity that I noticed was actually concerning the themes that we talked about in class. In 552, we talked about legends and people being interested in their past, which was also a major theme of romanticism that was discussed in my 555 class. Hopefully, knowing these similarities and having read a book from the romantic period before will help me to better understand El Estudiante de Salamanca.
